Jubilee tour 4 Basilicas
The Jubilee in Rome or Holy Year, which is the year of the remission of sins, reconciliation, conversion and sacramental penance was celebrated first in 1300. During the Holy Year you can gain the plenary indulgence by visiting at least one of 4 papal basilicas.
During our journey we will visit all four! The Basilica of St. John Lateran, which is also the city’s cathedral, the Basilica of Santa Maria Maggiore, the only of the four to have preserved early Christian structure, the Basilica of Saint Paul Outside the Walls, and the most important .. the Basilica of St. Peter. The original St. Peter’s Basilica was built by Constantine on the spot where he was buried the Apostle Peter, father of the church and keeper of the keys of Paradise.
The peculiarity of the four papal basilicas is that they have a Holy Door and a Papal Altar. The Holy Door is opened with a special ceremony by the Pope or by his agent only for the duration of a Holy Year, and plays an important role in the granting of so-called plenary indulgence. On the Papal Altar only the Pope, or exceptionally, his Vicar, has the right to celebrate Mass.
